Languaging Diversity is an international biennial conference of the I-Land Inter-university Research Centre. The conference invites scholars from a wide range of disciplines, such as Linguistics, Social Sciences, and the Humanities. At the core of the event is an exploration of identity and diversity through multicultural, multilingual, and multidisciplinary perspectives. Following the success of eight previous editions held at the Universities of Naples (2013), Catania (2014), Macerata (2016), Cagliari (2017), Antwerp (2018), Teruel (2019), Lille (2021), and Turin (2023), the ninth edition of Languaging Diversity (LD2025) will be hosted by the University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy.

We invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to submit their abstracts for the upcoming Conference dedicated to Languaging Diversity and Identity in Digital Environments, which will seek to explore how language, literature, and culture intersect in digital spaces.

Focus and Topics

Digital environments have become crucial environments where linguistic diversity and cultural identities are negotiated, reshaped, and performed. This conference intends to examine how language use, literary expressions, and cultural practices contribute to identity formation, social belonging, and exclusion online. We particularly encourage contributions that address the role of social media, digital platforms, and audiovisual translation (AVT) in mediating these processes.

The event will be held in person only.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Multilingualism and translanguaging in digital discourse
  • Digital vernaculars and emerging linguistic practices
  • Code-switching, slang, and online identity construction
  • The impact of AVT on cultural representation in social media content
  • Professional and non-professional AVT practices in online platforms
  • Memes, GIFs, and the role of translation in digital culture
  • Accessibility and inclusion in AVT for online audiences
  • Literary representations of online identities
  • Digital storytelling and multilingual narratives
  • Fanfiction, social media poetry, and participatory literature
  • Diversity and inclusion in digital media
  • Language technology and techno-linguistic biases
  • Translanguaging and identity formation in digital spaces

We welcome both theoretical and empirical approaches, as well as interdisciplinary perspectives.
