ROBERT C. DREWS
A.B., M.D., F.A.C.S., F.C. Ophth.
Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology
Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis
Undergraduate and graduate degrees, and residency training in ophthalmology were obtained at Washington University and its School of Medicine. Undergraduate studies included majors in physics and mathematics, and later chemistry. The former led to the development of the Ivy ophthalmological computer system for office management (now Alcon Systems). Interest in physics and chemistry led to detailed studies of explanted intraocular lenses including an extensive study of the lenses removed at the Barraquer Institute following the pioneering work of Joaquin Barraquer, and the early study of several hundred intraocular lenses removed in the United States. The latter culminated in the Binkhorst Medal Lecture of 1982 at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting.
The technical aspects of microsurgery have been a consuming interest. Dr. Drews directed the St. Louis Eye Bank during some of its formative years and spearheaded the support of the Eye Bank by the St. Louis Society for the Blind for over 25 years. His involvement in corneal transplantation has continued. Dr. Drews has developed a number of instruments for use in ophthalmology, especially in surgery. Forty of these have been published. All in all Dr. Drews has had over 400 publications including over 250 papers in refereed journals, 52 book chapters, and 4 books.
He has been a member of 30 medical and ophthalmological societies and President of 11 of them, including the International Intraocular Implant Club. He is a past President of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology. Dr. Drews has been one of the Vice Presidents of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has served on 29 Boards of Directors including the Board of Trustees of Washington University. He is currently Chairman of the Council of the American Ophthalmological Society. His honors include the Distinguished Alumnus Awards from Washington University and its School of Medicine and eleven other special recognitions for his work. He has given 8 named lectures and received 10 medals, from six countries. Among the ophthalmological organizations in which he is a member there are several of special importance: the International Intraocular Implant Club, the International Ophthalmic Microsurgery Study Group, and the American Board of Ophthalmology.
